August 2016 Pedalsport Club Newsletter

Dear Pedalsport Member,

Welcome to the August 2016 Pedalsport CC newsletter. We are once again rounding up the action of the last month and looking ahead to what’s coming up in the next few weeks. As ever, keep an eye on our website (www.pedalsportclub.com) for all the latest news on our regular sessions – any cancellations and updates will be posted there and on our Facebook group.

CLUB RACES

We have two evenings of club “Crit-Cross” racing planned for the second half of the summer. Crit-Cross is basically Cyclo-Cross style racing (tight corners, changes of direction) on tarmac. We will mark out a course on the tarmac cycle circuit using cones and tapes. We will use the club’s electronic timing system and every event will include at least 2 races for every rider. Race duration will be in the region of 5-10 mins. We’ll be relying on a few volunteers to help us with the sign-on process and tidying up after the events – please help if you can.

There will be a session charge of £2.50 for all riders.

Thursday Club Crit Cross 25 August – open to all club members of all abilities. We’ll run races split into Under-14 and Over-14, with shorter under-10 races if there is a demand.

Monday Fun Crit Cross 5 September – aimed at our adult members only (16 and over) of all abilities. We’ll split you on the night according to gender and/or ability. We’ll also allow you time to practice the course. The aim being to give you a fun taste of racing without the pressures and numbers you’ll find in an open circuit or Cyclo-Cross race.

OTHER UPCOMING RACES – JULY 2016

Here’s a selection of local events in the month of August and early September. You’ll find all of them listed on the British Cycling website’s events calendar. Almost all allow you to enter on the day.

Tuesday Sessions: 9-12 year olds

Tuesday 17th May 2016 will see the start of a six week run of road skills and fitness sessions for 9-12 year old riders who are full Pedalsport club members (£10 per year – available on the night or on the pedalsportclub.com website). The sessions will take place on the lower bottom straight of the circuit from 7-8pm. The sessions will focus on basic skills and fitness and will be suitable, in particular, for riders in the Saturday morning red group. The cost of each session will be £2.50, which covers track hire. All riders wishing to take part in the session should be at the circuit no later than 6.45pm so that we can get them registered before the session begins. Parents must stay on site during the session but, for safety reasons, not venture beyond the carpark or fenced banking area as the club’s senior riders will be race training on the circuit. Riders must not ride on the circuit before their session begins. They should wait outside the clubhouse to be escorted as a group onto the circuit at the start of the session. Again, this is for safety reasons. If you have any questions, please email pedalsport@live.com

Go-Ride – Changes for 2016

Return Date: Pedalsport’s Go-Ride Saturday morning club returns on 6th February 2016. Please note sign-on will now be at the entrance to the clubhouse.

Volunteers Needed: We are looking for more help with the sign-on of riders and collection of subs. If you would like to join the team, please speak to Keith or Jo at sign-on.

Changes: Over the winter break we have worked on a few changes to how we will organise and run the sessions, but for the riders (and parents) very little changes. A summary is below, but if you have any questions please speak to one of the coaching or admin team.

  • – Race weekends. The club is running monthly public races at the track on a Saturday morning, which replaces all coaching. Riders of all ages will be able to participate and races will be timed with podiums awarded on the day. The first race is the 27th February, then the 13th March and every second Saturday of the month thereafter. More details on pedalsportevents.com
  • – Rider pathway and progression. We have developed a bespoke documented rider pathway for the club which enables the coaching team to deliver content to riders applicable to their skill and experience level. This will allow us to share a programme with riders, to help them understand what they will be learning in coming weeks. We will also be looking at how all our riders perform using standard British Cycling assessments – this will allow us to move riders between our Go-Ride groups certain of their ability to learn in the group they are moving to.

Look out for more information at the track!
