October 2016 Pedalsport Club Newsletter

Dear Pedalsport Member,

Welcome to the October 2016 Pedalsport CC newsletter. We are once again rounding up the action of the last month and looking ahead to what’s coming up in the next few weeks. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our website (www.pedalsportclub.com) for all the latest news on our regular sessions – any cancellations and updates will be posted there and on our Facebook group.

Although we don’t normally theme our newsletters, coaching is very much in the spotlight this month. The next two stories below concern the progress being made by our Under-16 (Youth A) and Under-14 (Youth B) riders and the recognition they have received from the GB Cycling Team’s development coaches. This is, above all else, testament to the dedication and application of all these riders and to the support they receive from their parents. But it also reflects well on our club’s coaches, who put in a huge amount of unpaid time running training sessions throughout the year.

It’s also worth noting that the increasing emphasis in the last 12 months on coaching our younger riders in the Under-12, Under-10 and Under-8 categories to race, not just ride, has started to bear fruit with some great performances in Circuit Races through the summer and now in the early Cyclo-Cross races on the 2016-7 season.

All our coaches are volunteers – your session fees are used to pay for venue hire and any profits are ploughed back into club equipment and coach training courses.

We’ve just had the good news that four of our club riders have been invited to become Great Britain Cycling Team Apprentices in 2017. Only 100 riders nationally are invited to join every year and being an apprentice opens up the opportunity for extra coaching sessions and input from GB Team coaches. The four riders are James Bunting, Josh Greenwood, Max Rushby & Dylan Westley.

In addition, a number of Pedalsport riders have been selected to take part in Regional Schools of Racing (RSR) this Autumn and next Spring. RSRs are generally for riders in the A and B Youth categories and are run by the GB Cycling Team to help talented riders progress in the sport. An RSR is typically a whole day of coaching, run by GB Coaching staff, at a regional venue. RSRs are run in the Track, Road and Mountain Bike Cross-County disciplines. Amongst the Pedalsport riders selected are: Elliot Brett, James Bunting, Fin Cooper-Oldroyd, John Culpan, Ewan Davies, Josh Greenwood, Olivia Ingham, Billy Lazenby, Max Rushby, Oliver Walton, Dylan Westley, Lucy Whearty and Jenson Young.

We are really pleased to announce that we can now offer a free “drop-in” Physio service open to all full Pedalsport club members. The sessions will be 7-9pm on Tuesday evenings in the clubhouse at Brooksbank Cycle Circuit. Simply turn up on the night and speak to our Physio, Olivia Overton. Olivia will also be working with our Youth Development riders in the next 12 months. These sessions will be strictly club member only and Olivia will have a full membership list to cross-check against.

The annual Pedalsport Club Party will be on Friday 17th February 2017 at 7pm. We will be combining prizes, awards, food, music and games and the Heath Rugby Club in West Vale will once again be the venue. Tickets will be available soon. Pop the date in your diary. All members are very welcome!

Briefly, these are the current weekday club sessions. Full details can be found on our website – https://pedalsportclub.com/ – Please check our guidance notes on suitability of these sessions “is this session for me?” before your first visit – some of the sessions are aimed at riders preparing for races and are therefore fast & technically challenging:

We are running a 1 hour adult beginner/novice Cyclo-Cross and Cross-Country mountain bike skills session on Saturday 22 October, 11.00 – 12.00 at Brooksbank Cycle Circuit. This is aimed at inexperienced/novice adults (ages 18 upwards). The session will include instruction and coaching on basic off-road skills. The session is limited to 6 places on a first-come, first served basis. Simply send an email to pedalsport@live.com with your name, date of birth & phone number with “Off-Road Skills” in the subject line. We will reply to everyone, confirming places for the first six. You will need to have an off-road bike with studded/knobbled tyres. A Cyclo-Cross bike or Cross-Country mountain bike would be ideal. If there is demand, we plan to run additional sessions in the near future. Participants must be Pedalsport CC club members, though adult membership to the end of the year will be available on the day for £10. The session fee is £2.50.
